Principal News                          School Bulletin: September 12, 2007

1. WASL information is included in this week’s bulletin. We are very proud of the excellent academic achievements of our students!

2. ITBS testing date change: I moved the ITBS testing to later in the school year. We will test 1st through 8th students the week of November 12th. Please do not schedule any appointments or vacation for that week. We will receive the ITBS test results after Christmas break.

3. Music instruction began this week. Miss Jeannette Mitchell (our parish Youth Ministry Coordinator) is teaching 7th and 8th grade Music this year. Welcome Jeannette to our staff!

4. Please turn in your Emergency Card, Student Medication form, and Driver’s Information for Field Trip form to the office as soon as possible.

5. Carpool: Students may be dropped off at school at 8:15 when adult supervision begins. Parents may wait in cars until 8:15, but do not leave your children unattended at school before 8:15.  Parents need to drive up all the way to the dumpster area so as many cars can fill in- do not stop at your child’s grade. It would help everyone get through carpool on time in the morning if your children are ready to exit the car. The afternoon carpool should improve by the end of this week when families utilize more carpools and everyone becomes more familiar with the procedures.

6. Immunizations: Thank you for providing updated information.

7. Students are required to wear a sweatshirt, sweater, or vest to all church liturgies. All shirts are tucked in.

8. Annual School Appeal: Thank you to over 125 families who turned in their pledge cards! The remaining 25+ families need to return the pledge card this week! The pledge was due the first day of school. There are pledge envelopes in the office.

9. Spanish instruction will begin October 25th. The classes are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays after school (not Wednesday). There are registration forms in the office.

10.        Parents are finalizing the school calendar. The annual school calendar is on the school’s web site.

11.        Our updated School Handbook went home last week and is now posted on the website. Please sign the parent receipt page inserted in the handbook and return to the office.

 12.    Daily Mass begins tomorrow on September 13th with grades 2 and 8. Seventh & 1st grade

students will begin to attend Daily Mass in October.

 13.    Curriculum Night takes place this Friday, September 14th. There will be no general meeting      before or after the sessions. This is an adult only event, and there is no time scheduled for individual conferences with specialists or teachers.

    1. Kindergarten: Parents had a curriculum session before school started. They do not need to attend on Sept. 14th. Kindergarten (and other) parents are invited to view the 30 minute Second Step family video. The video will be shown in the library every 30 minutes beginning at 4:30.
    2. Specialists: Our PE, Reading , Math, and Science teachers present their curriculum and answer general questions from 4:30 to 5:00 PM in their classrooms. Some specialists join the homeroom teachers during the homeroom curriculum sessions.
    3. Homeroom teachers present their curriculum information twice. Parents are invited to attend either session: the first session is from 5:15 to 6:00 PM and the second session is from 6:15 to 7:00 PM.

Thank you to getting our school year off to a great start! Mrs. Lunn

September 12, 2007                                                                2007 WASL Scores

Dear School Parents,

Last spring, our 4th and 7th grade students took the Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL). Thank you to teachers, students, and parents for working together! These excellent scores demonstrate academic learning and teamwork!

One hundred percent (100%) of the 4th graders met the state Reading and Math standards! Eighty three percent (83%) met the Writing standard. Thank you to Mrs. Partington, Mrs. Scheuer, Miss Mitchell, Miss Constantino, and Mrs. Babb for bringing these students to state standards!

Our last year’s 7th graders performed well! Ninety three percent (93%) of 7th graders met the state Reading and Math standards and 96% met the Writing standard.  Thank you to Mrs. Schwartz for the 7th graders accomplishments!

Parents of last year’s 4th and 7th grade students should receive their child’s WASL scores in the mail this week. Looking at information from a variety of tests and assessment tools remains the best way for teachers and parents to determine a child’s academic progress. No single test can tell us everything about a student’s performance. Parents can access the web site for the Office of the Superintendent for Public Instruction at www.K12.wa.us  for more information on the WASL.              Mrs. Lunn

2007-08 SCHOOL CALENDAR

Thank you for your response to the request for updated information and the addition of cell #/email addresses.  If you did not receive an email requesting this information, please contact Laurie Brown at the school office so she can update her records with your current email address.  Unfortunately, because the calendar has gone to print we are unable to add any information at this time.

We have changed the formatting in the calendar so that the additional information could be included.  However, due to space limitations, some of the information you may have provided could not be added.   In those cases, the first listing given in the email was used.  In the future, the request for Cell #/Email will be added to the calendar proofing sheet that is sent out during the summer.  Families, at that time, will have the opportunity to change or add to their listing information.

Request for Additional Calendars:

Each school family will receive a school calendar complimentary of PTO.   For the busy family who wants to be kept up-to-date wherever they are (at work, in the car or as a great gift for grandparents), additional calendars may be purchased for $8.00.  If you would like to purchase a calendar, please complete the order form and return with payment to the school office. Please submit your order by Monday, September 17th.  The additional calendars will be distributed through the Wednesday Envelope.

JOIN THE JUNIOR HIGH SPEECH TEAM

6th, 7th and 8th Graders and Parents:

The Junior High Speech Team is a great way to have fun, gain skills and confidence in public speaking, and win high school scholarships.

Fun speech categories like Humorous Reading, Dramatic Reading, Duo Reading, & Storybook Reading are a great way to demonstrate your acting flair while reading written literature

Speech categories like Expository, Oratory, Editorial Commentary and Impromptu help you learn skills to write a great speech, think on your feet, and deliver a speech with impact.

Catholic high schools offer all-day tournaments.  Typical audience size is 10 to 15 students & parents.   Students can sign up for 1 or more of the 2 or 3 tournaments.  There are limits on number of entries, so 8th graders have priority.   8th grade winners can earn high school scholarships.

Parents:  We need your help to coach.  Please contact the school office if you’re interested; No experience necessary; Coaches work with 1 – 3 students; Practice times are on the coach’s schedule

Speech sign-up sheets will go out in the Sept. 19th Wednesday envelope; an informational meeting for students, parents, and coaches will be held the evening of Sept. 26th
