Second Grade News and Homework

April 28, 2008

Dear Parents,

Students did a wonderful job of speaking and explaining what they have learned at the First Communion Celebration and they looked so very nice!  They had a great time at the reception.  Thank you to those parents who helped to prepare and see that the reception went smoothly!

In math we will review borrowing and carrying and have some tests on them to see how well everyone is doing.  It can be hard to switch from one to the other and students must carefully look at the sign and remember what to do because the signs are as different as salt and sugar are from each other.  If you don’t follow “recipe” directions you will not get the result you wanted.  If you do not follow the signs, as students have found, the answer is not correct.

In reading we’ll read “Dinosaur Fossils” and learn what “paleontologists” do.  To learn more about this story and the vocabulary, see the attached sheet.  Students will bring home the decodable reader to read on Monday night.

This Thursday is when Jesus ascended into Heaven.  In our state it will be celebrated this coming Sunday.  Therefore we will learn about the ascension of Jesus into Heaven this week.  We will learn bout Pentecost (The decent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles) next week which happened ten days later and will be celebrated at Mass the following weekend.

Please remember those in need and support the food drive.  If each student can bring in at least one item, they will be able to feel that they are making a difference to others in some way.  We have learned about the “Corporal Works of Mercy” and have discussed how “Feed the Hungry” is one of those works.  (The others are: Clothe the Naked, Visit the Sick, Shelter the Homeless, Visit the Imprisoned, and Give Drink to the Thirsty and Bury the Dead.)

Monday:  Complete spelling p. 129-130.  Turn this into me tomorrow morning.  Read your decodable reader as a reading warm-up then read your AR book. Review math facts for about 5-10 minutes.

Tuesday:   Complete math workbook pages 397-398.  Be ready to correct tomorrow morning.  Review your AR book. Review math facts for about 5-10 minutes.

Wednesday:  Have a parent give you a "practice spelling test" and speed drill in preparation for our weekly tests.  Review your AR book with one of your parents for tomorrow’s AR Test (Fill out the reading log too) and review math facts for about 5 minutes.

I enjoy working with your child!  Have a great week!

Sincerely,
