Second Grade News and Homework

May 5, 2008

Dear Parents,

In class this week for reading we will read a story called Why Did the Dinosaurs Disappear?  To learn more about this story and the vocabulary, see the attached sheet.  Students will bring home the decodable reader:  The Train Trip to read on Monday night.  In phonics we have often discussed that “prefixes” are added at the beginning of a base word and change the meaning.  “Suffixes” come at the end of a base word and change the meaning.  This week our spelling test will include these words.

This week in Religion we will learn about Pentecost, the decent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles.  Pentecost will be celebrated in Mass this Sunday.  We will learn about the gifts of the Holy Spirit and what happened when the Apostles received the Holy Spirit.  Students are excited to share things they received for their First Communion.  If your child would like to bring in something to share, they may.  Some have been bringing in Bibles which they received to share with the class.

In Math today we will be reviewing for Cumulative Review Tests we will take on Tuesday and Wednesday.  Then we will learn about counting change with dollar bills.  If your child missed any problems on last week’s tests, which were in your child’s folder on Friday or today, you can practice with him or her.  The test will mainly cover addition with carrying, subtraction with borrowing, counting money, telling time, reading graphs and story problems. Students will be studying their sevens subtraction facts this week.  For homework there is more than one sheet, but your child should find them very easy to complete because we have done other exercises and activities with these types of problems.

I need some parents to help any time that you are available to make portfolios to put each student’s work in from this school year.  Students are very excited at the end of the year to review all that we have learned and done during second grade and they love to put their work into their own portfolio to take home.  The students will finish the portfolios in class by gluing di-cuts, a heading, and their name on it in class, but I will need help folding and stapling them beforehand.  This can be completed any day and time, as long as you schedule a time to stop by and pick up an example and a quick description of how to do them.  They can be stapled in the PTO Room or at home.  (You can send a note with your child if you are able to help.)

Monday:  Complete phonics pages 225 and 227.  (Be sure to read ALL directions and follow them carefully!  These sheets are like the game “Simon Says” on paper.)  Turn in tomorrow morning.  We will correct and discuss together in class.  Read the decodable reader:  The Train Trip to one of your parents and then read on your own.  Review math facts for about 10 minutes.  Be sure to fill out your reading log each day this week!

Tuesday:  Complete math pages   281, 282, 283 and 284.  We will discuss and correct in class tomorrow morning.  Read to one of your parents for at least ten minutes and then on your own.  Review math facts for about 5 minutes.

Wednesday:  Do math pages 317 , 318, 319 and 320.  Turn in tomorrow morning.  We will correct and discuss it together in class.  Review math facts for about 10 minutes.

Thursday:  Have a parent give you a "practice spelling test" and speed drill in preparation for our weekly tests.  Read to one of your parents for at least 10 minutes and review math facts for about 5 minutes.

I enjoy working with your child!

Sincerely,
