Second Grade News and Homework
May 12, 2008
Dear Parents,
I hope that mothers
had a wonderful Mothers’ Day and enjoyed the very lovely cards, poems and
drawings and nice wishes that your child had for you on Sunday! Students worked very hard on these and were
very excited to share this special day with you!
Just
wanted to send a reminder that the Spring Concert is this Thursday.
School doors will open at 6:30 and students will need to be in the
classroom by 6:40. Since the Spring
Concert is this week, we will have a short spelling list. The spelling list for this week is on the
edge of tonight’s spelling worksheet on page 88.

In class this week
for reading we will read a story called “Let’s Go Dinosaur Tracking!” Students will bring home the decodable
reader: The Train Trip.
In Math we will
study our sevens subtraction facts and review both subtraction and addition
facts. In class we will review borrowing
and we will learn about fractions.
In science we will
continue to learn about rocks and fossils, but we will also learn about
something else. Last Thursday a box
arrived in the mail for our class.
Students took some guesses as to what was in it. When we opened it, students discovered
butterfly larva (caterpillars.) They are
for part of our life-cycle unit. We
measured the larva last week and they have grown already! We will observe them carefully as they
progress from caterpillar to chrysalis to butterfly.
Monday: Complete spelling pages 88-89. Turn in tomorrow morning. We will correct and discuss it together in
class. Read the decodable reader to one
of your parents and then read on your own.
Review math facts for about 10 minutes.
Be sure to fill out your reading log each day this week!
Tuesday: Complete the math pages 407-408. Read to one of your parents for at least ten
minutes and then on your own. Review math
facts for about 5 minutes.
Wednesday: Write
four “asking sentences” (questions) and one exclaiming sentence
(exclamation). Remember correct
capitalization at the beginning of a sentence and for proper nouns. Please do NEAT work. Read to one of your parents for at least 10
minutes and then on your own and review math facts for about 10 minutes. Be ready for your AR test.
Thursday: Have
a parent give you a "practice spelling test" and speed drill in
preparation for our weekly tests. Read
to one of your parents for at least 10 minutes and then on your own. Review math facts for about 5 minutes.
Have a good week and
see you Thursday night!
Sincerely,
Miss Mitchell
