Second Grade News and Homework

June 2, 2008

Dear Parents,

Our field trip to the North Creek Rehab Center to sing for the residents there is this Friday.  Our plan is to walk. I need to know ahead of time if you are interested in chaperoning on the walk.  I can take any parent who wants to come.  (I already had drivers sign up, but we hopefully will not need to drive).  Please fill out the attached form and return by tomorrow or Wednesday at the latest so that I can assign students to chaperones.  We will leave the school at 9:15 and, sing around 10:00 and return about 11:15.

We have been discussing the virtue of courage.  If students have any news articles or other examples to share with the class about someone who demonstrated courage, they may bring it in. This week for reading we will learn about a boy who uses courage to get over the fear of standing up in front of an audience in a story called “As Brave as a Mountain Lion.”  Read The King’s Ring and tell a parent the beginning, middle and end.

In math we will take final speed drills over all of our math addition facts and subtraction facts.  We will review concepts learned this year and take some quizzes throughout the week.

Students understand what the beginning, middle and end are when they hear a story read to them, but some are having difficulty with remembering to put a beginning middle and end when they write their own stories.  We will review and students need to write a story with a problem to solve this week for the spelling story.

Beginning- Introduces the characters, setting and the first details of the story. (Usually answers: Who?What? When ?Where?)

Middle- tells the main part of the story.  There is usually a problem that needs to be solved. It tells how the characters try to solve the problem.

End-  tells how the problem is solved and how the story finishes off.  It has a clear conclusion that tells how the main event is finished.

The end of school is almost here!  All borrowed materials need to be returned to the school.  If you have any books, or other things you used at home during the school year, please return them this week.   Next Tuesday, June 13th at 1:00 I will have the students clean out and wash their desks in a calm and orderly fashion, but students and I will need some help from parents.  Please send a note or email if you can help.  Thanks!

Monday:  Complete spelling pages 116-117 and.  Turn in tomorrow morning.  We will correct and discuss it together in class.  Read the decodable reader to one of your parents and then read on your own.  Review math facts for about 10 minutes.  Be sure to fill out your reading log each day this week!

Tuesday: Complete the math pages 229, 291 and 292.  Turn in tomorrow morning.  Read to one of your parents for at least ten minutes and then on your own.  Review math facts for about 5 minutes.

Wednesday:  Write a short spelling story with a beginning, middle and end.  Be sure to label the beginning, the middle and the end and give the story a title.  Turn in tomorrow morning.  We will correct and discuss it together in class.  Read to one of your parents for at least 10 minutes and then on your own and review math facts for about 10 minutes.

Thursday:  Have a parent give you a "practice spelling test" and speed drill in preparation for our weekly tests.  Read to one of your parents for at least 10 minutes and then on your own.  Review math facts for about 5 minutes.
