Curriculum Notes

Religion: This week we are beginning to look at God’s love and forgiveness (chapter 13) in preparation for our study of the sacraments of reconciliation and anointing of the sick (chapter 14).  The chapter 13 test will most likely be at the end of next week.  However, our main focus over the next two weeks will be on preparing for the Easter season mass on April 18, when the fifth grade will be presenting the liturgy.  Please join us if you can!

Science: This week we should be concluding our experiment with the Tenebrio Habitats. We have been comparing the growth of the Tenebrio under different environmental conditions and will begin to make a final count of fully developed adults to see which environment was most supportive of the beetle life cycle. We will be concluding our entomology study with a test on Wednesday the 16th. The test will consist of information found on 4 of the handouts distributed in class. They are titled: Entomology, General Insect Anatomy, Madagascar Hissing Cockroach, and Detailed Insect Anatomy Key.

Math:  This week we are reviewing chapter 10 in preparation for the test on Friday.

Social Studies:  We are working on revising our newspaper articles for the Constitutional Ratification Newspaper Front Page assignment.  Class time this week will also be set aside for students to work on their illustrations.  Final products will be typed in the computer lab at school next week.

Literature:  This week we are focusing our attention on “Circles, Squares, and Daggers, How the Native Americans Viewed the Skies.”  The writing assessment will be on Thursday and the comprehension assessment will be on Friday.

Language Arts:  Our language arts focus for the next two weeks will be tied to the social studies articles.  We will be discussing the different voices present in factual vs. editorial articles and the importance of formal language use in both articles.  Students are encouraged to read both types of articles at home for silent reading homework this week.
