Curriculum Night
I am looking forward to meeting more of you this Friday evening at curriculum night. You will receive a handout outlining each fifth grade subject and the E.E. Week permission slip form.
Also at curriculum night, I will be taking sign ups for parents who wish to come in and help out in the classroom. Please send me an email if you are interested in coordinating the volunteer schedule.
E.E. Week
Permission slip forms will be handed out during curriculum night. Please note that in order for your child to bring any medication to camp (including over the counter medicines such as Tylenol) you must turn in a note signed by your child’s doctor. State law requires a doctor’s signature before school personnel can administer any medication. There won’t be time to discuss E.E. Week at curriculum night, but please bring your questions to the meeting on September 25th at 6:30pm.
Important Dates:
9/12 – Picture Day (non-uniform)
9/13 – Social Studies Map Due
9/14 – 5th Grade to Daily Mass (wear red sweatshirt!)
9/14 – Curriculum Night!
Curriculum Notes
Religion: We are working through the material in chapter one this week (Sacraments of Creation) and discussing God’s gift of creation. The book test will be given next Tuesday or Wednesday.
Science: We will be studying various ecosystems found in nature through a detailed view of their communities. This will lead to studies building up to our experience at EE week in October.
Math: Students took the Fifth Grade Inventory Test this week. Mrs. Morris and I will use scores on this test along with last year’s WASL scores to plan our year. We will begin working through chapter one, reviewing place value and working with whole numbers.
English: We are reviewing the parts of a sentence. By the end of the week, students should be able to identify sentences and fragments, subjects and predicates, and four kinds of sentences.
Literature: We are diving into our first unit – Heritage. This week, students are asked to find newspaper articles with this theme. This year, spelling is tied to our reading stories. The first pre-test will be given on Wednesday with the final test next Tuesday or Wednesday. We won’t be following a Monday-Friday lesson plan.
Social Studies: This week students are familiarizing themselves with their new textbook. A partner quiz on geography terms (pages A17-A-18) will be given on Wednesday. Students have been working on these terms in class since last week. Maps of the classroom are due Thursday. Students have already been given over an hour of class time to work on these maps, so hopefully just the finishing touches need to be completed at home. Please check your child’s progress against the blue project sheet handed out last week.
