E.E. Week

I look forward to seeing you all tomorrow night for the E.E. Week parent meeting.  It will be held at 6:30 in the 5th grade classroom.  Bring your questions!

The confirmed cabin leaders will be announced at this meeting.  I am still looking for one more girls’ cabin leader.  I will work on carpool lists next week and let drivers know as soon as possible.

Math Small Groups

Small groups started today.  Small group placement was based on last year’s cumulative math grade, standardized test scores (ITBS and WASL), and teacher input.  Both groups should be working on the same material each day.  If you have any questions, feel free to contact me (nataliec@saintbrendan.org).

Important Dates:

9/25 – EE Week Meeting!

6:30pm in 5th Grade Classroom

9/27 – English Unit 1 Test

9/28 – 5th Grade to Daily Mass (wear red!)

The World’s Song

Let the whole world praise the Lord

who made everything.

Praise the Lord, hills and mountains,

fruit trees and forests;

All the animals, tame and wild,

reptiles and birds.

Praise the Lord, all people everywhere…

Girls and young men,

old people and children too.

- Lois Rock (based on the Gospel of Matthew)

Curriculum Notes

Religion: We are talking about the Church as a Sacrament of God’s life (chapter two).  There will be a brief overview of each of the seven Sacraments and how they relate to this theme.  The chapter one test will go home in this week’s yellow folder.

Science: This week we will discuss and explore the role of the primary consumers in the food cycle through observation and exploration of small mammals: mice. We will follow this by expanding our look at the food cycle and explore predator prey relationships found in the ocean.

Math:  The quiz on the first half of the chapter went home with your students on Friday.  This week we are moving to working on subtraction strategies.  We will talk about estimation, mental math, and continue to work with place value when we talk about subtracting large numbers.

English: We will review Unit 1 this week and take the test on Thursday.  Students should be able to identify the four different kinds of sentences, divide sentences into subjects and predicates, and identify simple subjects (including the implied you in imperatives) and simple predicates.

Literature:  We will read the second Heritage story in our reader, “Our Song.”  It is set in Senegal, Africa.  The spelling test and comprehension assessment will both be on Friday.

Social Studies: We will continue to work in collaborative groups on Roanoke play scripts this week.  Toward the end of the week, students will discuss props and costumes needed to perform the plays.  Look for an invitation to the performances to come home toward the end of the week.
