E.E. Week Carpools

I am working on carpool lists for the ride to camp and back.  It looks like we’ll have enough space in the vehicles of the cabin leaders to transport all the people and luggage to and from camp.  Thank you to everyone who volunteered to drive.  I will contact you if something changes and we need another car or two, but right now I’m only planning for the cabin leaders to drive.

Health Screening

The fifth grade health screening includes a scoliosis check.  Since all students will be required to remove their shirts for this portion of the screening, girls must wear either a bathing suit top or a narrow backed bra to school tomorrow.  Boys and girls will be separated into different rooms for the scoliosis screening.

10/9 – Cabin Leader Meeting (6:30pm)

10/11Roanoke Play Performances

10/12 – No School!

10/16 – Heritage Writing Assignment Due

Curriculum Notes

Religion: This week we are reviewing the Joyful Mysteries.  Students will be tested on these five mysteries later this month.  Tomorrow and Wednesday students will create their own study guide for the upcoming test.

Science: This week we are continuing our study of plankton focusing on the three primary types: phytoplankton, zooplankton, and meroplankton. We will also continue to discuss aspects of EE week in preparation for our EE experience.

Math:  This week fifth graders will continue to work on multiplication, with special emphasis given to using mental math to multiply.  At the end of the week, we will discuss drawing diagrams to solve certain problems, and see how that fits into our study of multiplication.

English: We will begin our study of nouns this week.  Students will review the definition of a noun as well as the difference between common and proper nouns.  Late in the week, the discussion will turn toward singular and plural nouns.

Literature:  We will not be reading a new story this week.  Instead, our efforts will focus on writing about our own heritage.  Students will be taken through the steps in the writing process (prewriting, drafting, revising, and editing) with an emphasis on their ideas.  A rubric for the writing trait of ideas was handed out today.

Social Studies: We are putting the finishing touches on our Roanoke Plays this week.  We look forward to seeing you at the performances on Thursday!
