5th Grade Newsletter: Week of November 19, 2007

Hi Parents,

Phew, we made it through ITBS testing!  It’s nice to have a short week to recoup from testing.  Here’s what is on the agenda:

Important Dates:

Ø     Tuesday, November 20th:  Three Religion Assessments (See below)

Ø     Wednesday, November 21st: Thanksgiving assembly at 10:30 in gym, feel free to join us if you can; Noon dismissal

Ø     Thursday, November 22nd -Friday, November 23rd: No School, Thanksgiving Holiday

Ø     Tuesday, November 27th: Frontier Story rough draft due

Subject Update:

Language Arts/Social Studies:  Students were handed a purple study guide for their chapter six test today.  The test is not until Thursday, November 29th, but I didn’t want to forget to give it to the students before the break.

They were also handed a gold project sheet outlining a Frontier Story and Map Project.  The map portion of the project is EXTRA CREDIT.  All students are welcome to complete the extra credit map, but those who did not like their score on the chapter five test are encouraged to complete it.  We will work on the writing portion of the project in class tomorrow and all next week.  The extra credit portion must be done on the students’ own time.

Math: Student are working on a measurement packet in class this week.  It will be due at the end of math class on Wednesday.

Religion: Tomorrow is a heavy religion assessment day.  Students will finally take their Joyful Mysteries test, the test on chapter three, and the first and second grade vocabulary quiz.  We reviewed the Joyful Mysteries today and worked on the chapter three review out of the book.  Students also took notes that should serve as a study guide for the book test – the terms for the fill in the blank portion of the test were listed on the board as was the response prompt (short essay) question.

Science: We are beginning our study of biomes of North America this week.

I hope you all have a fun and restful Thanksgiving break.  I am very thankful for the fifth graders this year, and the fun we have every day!
