6th Grade Newsletter: Week of January 14, 2008

It’s Monday again everyone!  Seems like they come awfully quick, don’t they?  Looking at the week ahead, here is what we’ve got planned:

Important Dates:

Ø     Wednesday, January 16th: English test, Matthew House speaker will be presenting at 2:00.

Ø     Thursday, January 17th: 6th grade attends daily Mass; please join us if you can.

Ø     Friday, January 18th: Happy Birthday to Savannah and Andrea!!  Spelling test, Social Studies vocabulary test

Subject Update:

Language Arts:  We will be spending the first part of the week preparing for the English test on Wednesday.  The students completed the unit check up last week.  So we will correct it and discuss any questions they have to help them get ready for the test.  If your child needs/wants additional practice, there is a practice test at the end of the unit that would be helpful.  This is not required.  We are also working on our normal spelling schedule this week.

Literature: Now that we have finished reading the Westing Game, we will take a moment to relax and watch the movie this week (it is rated G).  The students will be asked to compare and contrast the movie to the book.  In addition, we will be working in the lab two times this week to continue working on the Power Point Presentations.  By the end of the week I should have a good feel for where the students are at in the process and will set a final due date.

Math: Math progress reports will be sent home on Wednesday.  They need to be signed and returned by Friday.

This week the 6th graders will be working on the following:

·        Changing fractions to decimals

·        Repeating decimals

·        Sensible answers

·        Dividing by a decimal.

Religion: We have a guest speaker coming from Matthew House to present to the 5-8th graders.  We will learn about the mission and purpose of Matthew House.  Also in religion, the students are in the midst of reading and discussing Chapter 4.  With Mass on Thursday and food drive pick up on Friday, that’s probably all we will get through this week.  On that note, a friendly reminder to keep bringing in those food drive donations.  The drive continues through the end of the year.  Our class item is beverages (water, juice, tea, hot cocoa, etc.).  Thank you!

Science: This week we will study Darwin’s evolutionary theories in more depth. We will do this by closely following his famous 5 year long journey on the ship the Beagle. We will chart his voyage and explore the discoveries he made along the way.

Social Studies: This week in Ancient Civilizations, we will be concentrating on chapter five, lesson two (Civilization in the Indus Valley).  Students will be assigned a group project on Tuesday.  Please look over the project sheet with your student when it comes home.  They will work on this project in class Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and most of Friday.  Rough drafts will be due at the end of class on Friday.  The chapter five vocabulary quiz will also be on Friday.

Have a great week everyone!
