Subject Update

Language Arts: We will spend a good part of the week taking the revisions made to the students’ descriptive essays and typing them up in the lab.  In addition, the students will be learning about limericks and writing one for their Kindergarten buddy.  We are on a normal schedule for spelling this week.

Literature:  Today I introduced the final project for our Tuck Everlasting unit.  The students will be making a flip chart that includes information about the key elements of this story.  The project is due on Friday, March 21st, which is a revised date (it became clear that we would need more time).  The students will have class time to work on the project, but may need to do some work at home as well.  Tomorrow (Tuesday) the students will take their final quiz over the book, which we finished reading last week.

Math: The sixth grade will take the chapter 7 test this Wednesday, March 12. They will also begin working on multiplying fractions.  Math progress reports will be sent home Wednesday.  This is the last progress report for

the second trimester.  The grades reflect everything completed as of Friday, March 7.  The report needs to be signed and returned by Friday, March 14.

Religion: This week we will be finishing Chapter 7 and beginning the review for the test, which I’m tentatively scheduling for next Tuesday.  On Friday, we will start our Family Life unit with the first lesson, which is entitled ‘Family Background.’  The goal of the unit is to help students see how they are a part of a nation of people of many different ethnic backgrounds.

Science: This week we will be summarizing Newton’s three Laws of Motion. We will also be studying how Newton convinced the world that Aristotelian physics and ideas about motion were incorrect. We will do this through duplicating Newton’s experiment with levers and pendulums.

Social Studies: This week we will be finishing up chapter six in preparation for the test next Thursday (the 20th).  We will discuss the Qin and Han dynasties this week.  Look for the study guide to come home this Thursday.  The matching vocabulary quiz will be tomorrow.

*** Please note:  I (Mrs. Schwartz) will be sending home progress reports tomorrow (Tuesday) with the students to give them an opportunity to talk with me (before report cards come out) about any questions they have.  Please take a look at them, then sign and return them.  Thank you!

Have a great week everyone!
