6th Grade Newsletter: Week of March 31, 2008

Welcome back everyone!  I hope that you all had a wonderful, relaxing break.  It’s amazing how quickly one week goes by!  Now we start the long haul to summer vacation.  Here is a look at what is in store for this week:

Important Dates

Ø           Tuesday, April 1st: Uniform shorts are allowed

Ø           Thursday, April 3rd: Tuck Everlasting vocabulary quiz

Ø           Friday, April 4th: Happy Birthday Robbie!  Noon dismissal, spelling test, March Independent Reading Requirements due

Subject Update

Language Arts: We will be starting Unit 3 in our English book this week, which focuses on verbs.  In addition, the students will be participating in Quiz Bowl, which is my own version of Jeopardy.  In groups, they will be answering questions based on the information they recorded in their Scholastic notes.  We are on a normal schedule for Spelling this week.

Literature: Before break, we finished reading Tuck Everlasting and turned in the final project (the flipchart).  Because we ran out of time that week, we will be watching the movie Tuck Everlasting this week (starting on Wednesday) and comparing/contrasting it with the book.  Please note: The movie is rated PG.  If you prefer that your child NOT view this movie or if you would like to preview it ahead of time, please contact me right away.  There isn’t really anything that is inappropriate in the movie.  The PG rating comes from a scene that contains some violence, but it is not graphic.  The students have been waiting to see it since the beginning of the unit and are really excited to finally watch the movie.   Also in literature this week, the March independent reading requirements are due on Friday.

Math: We will continue work on fractions.

Ø     Mental Math with Fractions

Ø     Choose the Operation Involving Fractions

Ø     Dividing Fractions

The first math progress report for this trimester will be sent home on Wednesday, April  9th.

Religion: We are starting Chapter 8 this week, which is entitled ‘Our Journey and God’s Presence.’  I thought we would start it before break, but we didn’t get that far.  It is all about the Israelites continued journey to the Promised Land.  Later in the week, we will have our 2nd Family Life lesson.  This chapter focuses on family traits.

Science: Sorry, Mr. Fairbank wasn’t available to give an update on science.

Social Studies: This week we are starting our study of ancient Greece (chapter seven).  This week we will cover the geography of Greece and the two earliest known Greek cultures, Minoan and Mycenaean.

Have a great week everyone!
