6th Grade Newsletter: Week of June 9, 2008

Hello Parents!

Can you believe this is our last week of school?!!!  Another year has flown by and now we can take a deep breath and say “We’re done!”  Congratulations to you and your soon-to-be 7th grader!  I’d like to say a sincere THANK YOU to each of you for all your support throughout the year.  I am grateful for the opportunity to work with you and your children and we’ve had a lot of fun along the way.  It’s been a great ride!  The good (or bad) news is that you’re not quite rid of me yet.  You will all see me again next year in 7th grade for Literature and Language Arts.  In the meantime, please enjoy the summer with your family!

Subject Update:

Language Arts/Literature: We will be finishing up some last minute English lessons this week, along with using some of this time to wrap up the art project from last week.  On Wednesday afternoon, the students will be cleaning out their desks and bringing home most of their belongings.  Thursday will be spent cleaning up the classroom and getting it ready to be cleared out.  Also on Wednesday, we will have a read-a-thon in the classroom.  The students may bring a pillow, a blanket or sleeping bag, and a healthy snack for this fun activity.  Finally, I will be handing out the students’ summer reading assignment this week.  Each in-coming 7th grade will be required to read one grade appropriate book and write a 1-2 page summary of the book.  Please take a moment to read over the requirements.  Thank you!

Math: This week the sixth graders will be working on a graphing activity.  The last progress reports were handed out Wednesday, June 4. These need to be signed and returned by Wednesday.  The sixth graders have worked very hard this year and I have enjoyed seeing their progress.  I look forward to challenging them next year.

Have an enjoyable and relaxing summer!!! ~Mrs. Riley

Religion:  On Tuesday, we will have out last Family Life lesson entitled “Family Economics.”  The goal of this lesson is to help students understand how money is used in family life and in society.   I will also be giving the 6th graders (only as practice) the ACRE test.  This stands for the Assessment of Catholic Religious Education.  It is a test that the Archdiocese is asking us to administer in 5th and 8th grade.  I thought it would be interesting to see how the 6th graders do on the 5th grade exam.  Again, it will just be a practice activity.

Science: This week we will conclude our year by introducing mammalian anatomy through a brief study of the eye. We will also begin looking ahead to next year by reviewing old and introducing new concepts about space.

Social Studies: This week we are going to discuss chapter 10, the Aztecs and the Incas.  I have a photo album of a family trip to Peru that I will bring in for students to see some Incan ruins in a little more detail.  We will try to tie the year together with a final discussion of similarities and differences among all the civilizations we studied this year.

It feels strange signing off for the last time this year!  Again, thank you for all you do for this school and for your wonderful children!  Have a safe and restful summer!  Take care,
