Subject Update

Language Arts: This week’s writing focus is on peer conferencing.  The students will be learning the process for giving each other helpful feedback, which they will use to revise their Role Model papers.  We will also continue Unit 1 in our English text, with an emphasis on imperative and interrogative sentences.

Literature: Last week, the students took a quiz on the story ‘Zlateh the Goat.’  Unfortunately, most of them didn’t do as well as I would have liked.  Therefore, we spent the period today re-reading and discussing the story.  Tomorrow, I will be re-testing the students.  Then we will be moving on to the next short story, ‘Dragon, Dragon.’  The students have also begun reading their books for the October independent reading requirements.  Please be sure that your student is reading a minimum of 20 minutes per night, so that they will meet their goal.

Math: This week, I will be sending home a progress report on Wednesday.  It needs to signed and returned by Friday.  If you have any questions or concerns, please email me. (maryr@saintbrendan.org) Progress reports will be sent out every two weeks.

This week we will be working on the following:

·        Adding whole numbers and decimals

·        Subtracting whole numbers and decimals

·        Solving equations

·        Writing equations

There will be a quiz on Friday.

Religion:  We are reviewing for the Chapter 1 test, which will be on Thursday (I moved it back a couple of days).  The students received a study guide on Friday that will help them to prepare.  We will be going over it Tuesday and Wednesday.

Science:  We are currently studying the growth and development of crustaceans through our Brine Shrimp Lab. We are growing the small crustaceans under different environmental factors to compare their rate of growth. This is leading us to a detailed study of aquatic organisms and their behaviors.

Social Studies:  This week we are finishing up our discussion of the similarities and differences between Hammurabi’s Code and Biblical law.  Students will take the second vocabulary quiz for chapter two on Tuesday.  The chapter two test will be early next week (Tuesday or Wednesday).  Look for the study guide to come home mid-week.

Have a great week everyone!

Pam Schwartz =)
