6th Grade Newsletter: Week of 12/3/07

Hello Parents,

I hope that everyone is staying dry and out of the ugly weather!  I realize that many of you are having difficulty getting to and from home/school, so I’ve given instructions to the students as to what they need to work on at home if they are unable to make it.  Here is a breakdown of that information:

If they had to leave early today (Monday), They need to:

Ø     finish reading through the end of Chapter 10 and filling out their Case Notes in the Westing Game

Ø     work on their Egypt report (we had 40 minutes in class today, so they should do about the same at home)

Ø     start on Spelling workbook (due Wednesday)

In the event that you can’t make it to school tomorrow (or it is cancelled…not that I’m saying it will be), I asked everyone to take home the following materials tonight to be sure they could work on these at home tomorrow:

Ø     continue working on Egypt report, it will still be due on Friday.  Remember, if you get in a jam, it doesn’t have to be typed.

Ø     start reading Week #2 chapters in the Westing Game (read at least 2-3)

Ø     Finish your card for your Kindergarten buddy

Assuming that the rest of the week is normal, here is what I’m planning:

Thursday, December 6th: 6th grade attends daily Mass, please join us if you can.

Friday, December 7th: (busy day)

r    Noon dismissal; Non-uniform day;

r    Spelling test

r    Egypt report due

r    6th grade goes to the nursing home (9:45-10:45)

r    We will also be attending Blessed Sacrament at 11:30 in the chapel, please join us if you can.

Subject Update

Language Arts/Social Studies: The students are in the home stretch of the Egypt report, which is due this Friday.  They will have both the social studies and writing periods each day to work on it.

Literature:  Today the students should have finished reading through Chapter 3.  On Tuesday, we will begin the week #2 chapters and work on the questions for the week #1 chapters.

Math: 6th Math

Progress will be sent home on Wednesday, December 5, and need to be signed and returned by Friday, December 7.

They received their second Problem of the Week on Monday and this is due on Thursday.

The 6th graders will be working on the following this week:

·        One digit divisors with zeros in the quotient

·        2 digit divisors with a one digit quotient

·        Interpreting the remainder.

Religion: Happy Advent!  We began the Advent season this morning with a prayer service in the gym.  We will do this each Monday morning during Advent.  We will be meeting with our Kindergarten buddies on Wednesday.  The 6th graders have made Christmas cards for their buddy and will be giving it to them (along with a little treat) then.  The rest of our religion time this week will be made up of attending daily Mass and the Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament.

Science: This week we will be studying the history of the earth. This will include its formation within the solar system and the evidence supporting the formation and development of species.

Stay safe and dry everyone!  Take care,

Pam Schwartz
