Subject Update
Language Arts/Literature: Now that we
have finished reading The Westing Game, the students will have a test over the
book on Wednesday. There isn’t a lot
they can do to ‘study’ for this, as it tests them on their comprehension of the
events in the book. One possibility is
for parents to ask the student to tell them about the literary elements in the
book, such as: setting, characters, plot/key events, problem & solution,
and theme/moral.
Today I introduced a computer
related project to go along with the completion of the book. Students will be creating a power point
presentation that covers each of the literary elements I mentioned above. They received a handout that outlines all of
the requirements. Please take a moment
to look it over. We will be spending several periods in the lab this week to
work on this project. PLEASE NOTE: It will not be due until
mid January and I am encouraging
students to NOT work on this over break. They will have time after we return to
continue working on it.
I do recommend that students
do some independent reading during the Christmas break to keep up with the
December/January reading requirements (which will be due on January 31st). We will not have spelling this week.
Math: The 6th grade will be working on the
following this week.
·
Writing equations
·

·
Chapter 3 test on
Thursday
I wish everyone a joyous
Christmas! Mary Riley
Religion: We had two
guest speakers today, Sister Beatrice and Brother Tim from Maryknoll, who came
to speak to us about vocations of ministry.
Ask your student to tell you about their presentation. Due to the Advent retreat on Tuesday and
daily Mass and Adoration on Thursday, I don’t anticipate getting through much
more in Religion this week.
Science: I forgot to get an update from Mr. Fairbank, please
ask your student if there are any tests/quizzes or projects this week.
Social Studies: This week we are reviewing chapter 4 (Ancient Nubia) for the test on Wednesday. Students had the whole class period today to study for the test, and were handed review questions and an outline in addition to the study guide that was emailed home on Friday. All of these materials will make excellent study aides. Tomorrow, we will discuss the sheets that were handed out today and students will have another study period to prepare for their test.
I’d like to wish each
of you and your families a blessed and restful Christmas holiday! I pray for safe travels and lots of quality
time with your wonderful children! Many
thanks for all you do!
