Dear Parents,

I hope everyone had an enjoyable and relaxing Christmas vacation.  I would, also, like to thank the 7th grade families for the wonderful class gift, of a number of gift cards, which I will enjoy using.

Literature:  Today we began a new literature unit in which the students will be reading the book Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry.  They were introduced to the book today and received their copy.  In addition, I handed out a worksheet that contained information about the reading schedule and assignment due dates.  We will be spending the next four weeks on this unit, during which time the students will be writing responses to the book and participating in small group discussions.

Language Arts: The first part of our week will be spent working on a collective class poem for the 7th grade auction project.  The theme is “Peace in Nature.”  Other than that, I don’t want to give too much away!  Come see the product of our work at the auction!  The rest of the week will be spent introducing Unit 3 in the English text, which is on verbs.  We have a normal week for Spelling, as well.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!  I hope you all had a joyous and restful vacation.

Seventh graders begin the New Year with a new chapter.  We move to Chapter 11 in Unit 6, Overland Trade.  We began the unit today, continuing our discussion of maps.  Students were asked to complete a worksheet (for homework) asking them to compare different maps.

Come by and take a look at the maps of interest (or idiosyncratic maps) your kids created. They are hanging in the hall outside the 7th grade classroom.  The kids learned a lot about mapping by doing this project.

We will take on Lesson 1 and part of 2 this week.  I will return the Chapter 10 test (Wednesday) and Brochure (Tuesday).  If Mrs. Carlson agrees, I would like to display the brochures in the library.

Have a great week!!

Math:  On Monday and Tuesday, the 7th graders will be reviewing for their Chapter 3 test which they will take on Wednesday.  On Thursday, they will begin working on a geometry unit (Chapter 4). The students will also get a Problem of the Week on Monday, and it will be due on Thursday.

I hope 2008 is a great year for everyone!
