September 24, 2007

Dear parents,

We are finishing up the month of September and the students are working hard.  Please, read  the information below about all their classes.

On the 7th grade web page there is a link to the 7th grade schedule.

7th Grade Religion

Your child received back one quiz and one Vocabulary Test. We have finished the introductory chapter and Chapter 1 and this week move on to Chapter 2 where we focus on Baptism. I have asked your child to write about what his/her Baptism was like- please discuss where it took place and who was there. Students may bring a copy of their Baptismal certificate to school to share.

We will begin our investigation into Malawi to prepare for our guest speaker in a few weeks. Students will design a fundraising project to begin in February after educating other students about Malawi through our cross age family groups.

This Friday there will be a quiz on the Ten Commandments. Next Friday (10/5) there is a Vocabulary Test on Kindergarten and Grade 1 words. Your child has a list of all the vocabulary from K-8 and the prayers.

Math

This week we will be working on the following:

·        Choosing a computation method

·        Choosing an operation

·        Chapter review

·        Using tables

There will be a quiz on Friday

The first math progress report will be sent out on October 3, and every two

weeks after that.

9/24/07

Seventh graders took their first history quiz on Friday.  I hope to have the corrected tests back to the students Tuesday so we can discuss their answers.

This week, students are learning about the Crusades and bubonic plague – events that changed Europe forever.  At week’s end, I hope to introduce their first social studies

project.

Language Arts

In addition to our normal weekly spelling and root of the week activities, the students will be starting on Unit 1 in our English text, which focuses on the basic structure of the sentence.  This includes reviewing the 4 types of sentences, subjects and predicates, and conjunctions.

Literature

We will continue reading ‘A Boy and a Man’ in our text and work on answering comprehension questions with depth.  Also, Friday is the due date for the September independent reading requirements.  All books for September need to be finished and the related tests completed by Friday.  I have met with each student in the last week to check on their progress.  Please take a moment to ask your child how he/she is coming along.  Remember that a minimum of one book per month is required.

Other information

Like many of you, we are concerned about the amount (and weight) of books the 7th graders must carry around with them during their morning classes (because they don’t return to their homeroom until lunchtime).  In order to help with this situation, we are purchasing another bookcase for my room which will be used to store the students’ Literature, English, and Religion texts.  This way they will not have to carry them back and forth each day.  If they have homework in these texts, they will be responsible for bringing the book(s) back the next day.  I hope this will help!  =)
