BEARY WELCOME FRIENDS
May 5, 2008
Dear Parents,
We begin this week with introducing beginning and ending /b/ and /c/ sounds. We will also read decodable book #6 called “The Bib”. We will be reviewing the three types of sentences, TAS – T-telling sentences; A-asking sentences; and S-strong feeling sentences (exclamation).
Last week was the introduction of Writing Journals. The students showed great excitement and did very well with their first writing. Give them a hug for their hard work!
We continue to have weekly spelling test. This week we will be focusing on the “ap” word family. The students have been steadily improving their spelling abilities.
The students will be tested on these ten “No Excuse” spelling words: a, and, go, I, in, is, it, no, the, and to. Testing will occur near the end of May.
I can’t stress enough the need to practice daily on the sight words given. I will begin testing all 106 words (September – June) starting next week. Your child will feel successful when reading stories that they can identify sight words they know or can sound out.
In Math we will be exploring tallying marks and symmetry this week. Next week begins addition.
For Religion we will celebrate Mary the Mother of Jesus and will learn about the Holy Family. Our Second Step lesson will deal with how to handle distractions.
The reading theme this month is Patriotism. Attached to this letter is a handprint. Talk with your child about your family’s nationalities and write your family’s nationalities on the handprint. Please have your child color the handprint either red, leave it white or blue and then cut it out. Return these handprints as they will be going on our bulletin board about Patriotism. It will be wonderful to see all the different cultures that make up our classroom/country.
