February 9, 2006

Attendees:

Monica Carlin (Co-President), Carolyn Casey (Co-President), Arlene Sullivan (Principal), Desiree Engel (Secretary), Carol Peterson, Michelle Ryan, Dayna Wirtala, Julie Flor, Kate O’Brien-Rourke, Margie Schmutz

Opening:

The PTO meeting was called to order by Carolyn at 7:03pm with prayer.  The minutes from the January meeting were approved, after corrections were made.

Principal’s Report: (Arlene Sullivan)

Father Jim spoke to the fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth graders about vocations.  He shared about his surgery and sung for the kids as well.  He is very supportive of the school.  Sister Christine, a Franciscan sister, spoke to the seventh and eighth graders about religious life.  Children need to see happy people in their chosen vocation.  Returning registration is going on now.  There have been many calls about registration from new families.

School commission:  (Monica Carlin)

All of the purposed changes to the school uniform were accepted by the school commission.  The changes include: A plaid skort for kindergarten through fourth grade will be available; a navy skort will be available for fifth through eighth grade.  Khaki pants, as well as the navy pants, will be available for the junior high students. Navy blue and white polos will be available for all grades; the red polos are no longer part of the uniform.  The new sweatshirts will be of a higher quality and embroidered with the school logo.

Treasurer:

There is no report because Joan was unable to attend.

Membership:

Brenda Roberts is not interested in chairing membership next year.

Room Parents:

Brenda Roberts is not interested in chairing the room parents committee next year.

Auction: (Liz Kieffer and Krystie Pilukas)

Liz and Krystie were not able to attend the meeting.  They have had a good response on the raffle tickets, 9 or 10 of the $100 tickets have been sold.  They are getting responses to the basketball tournament.

Expense reimbursement requests need to be in by the Friday before the auction or it can be considered a donation.  A business sponsorship procurement position has been added to the volunteer commitment form.  Liz will continue on as co-chair, Krystie will not.  Someone will need to take over for Krystie next year.  A notice will be going out in the bulletin next week regarding the increase in ticket prices.  American Express will be accepted at the auction.

Car Pool:

Joe Bodmer will not be here to chair the car pool next year.  Pat Spak said that he would take over chairing car pool next year.  Joe is concerned about next year because he has had a very hard time staffing the car pool.  Pat is going to continue to volunteer on Mondays but he will need someone Tuesday through Friday.  Kate volunteered to do Tuesdays for next year.

Memory Book:

Lynda Weldy sent a note that the memory book is going well.  We extended the date on the clip art.  Mike Cano loaded all of the software on the computer.  They need pictures of all grades but especially kindergarten and fifth grade.  The digital camera is in Laurie Brown’s office.  Neither Lynda nor Raelyn will be continuing as memory book chair next year.

Hospitality:

Tracy sent an update on hospitality, the luncheon went well.  Tracy did not say if she was continuing on next year.

Sally Foster:

Lisa McCole and Sally Sonnen will be continuing on next year chairing Sally Foster.

Scrip: (Diana Munko)

Scrip is doing very well, year-to-date sales are $173,000, with $6500 in checking and an inventory of just under $17,000.  Is there something specific that Scrip money is going to be used for, something that can be used as an incentive?  Michelle would like to consider one more year and then quit.  Diana would like to continue for two more years, the second year someone could shadow her for scrip.

Bulletin: (Diana Munko)

Diana Munko may not continue doing the Wednesday bulletin next year.

Box Tops: (Julie Flor)

The contest between the classes to collect the most box tops has not increased the number of box tops that have been collected over previous years   Box tops will still be collected even though the contest is over this Friday.  Box top funds are not earmark for anything specific.  We were asked to consider earmarking these funds to hire a recess helper.  The box tops will make about $1000 this year.  Currently the box top money is going into the general fund.

Reader board update:  (Carolyn Casey)

The location has been approved by the city.  It is in the same location that the school identifying sign is right now, outside the office walkway, except it would be two sided combined reader board and school identification sign perpendicular to the street.  The look that the parish chose for the signs has not been approved.  The reader board can not be installed until the whole package has been

PTO General meeting speaker and date: (Monica Carlin)

Father Jim has committed to give a talk for the PTO Thursday, March 16 in the church.  The topic will be Different ways to get your children involved in the Mass.  The talk will be open to school and parish families.  Babysitting is being arranged.  There will not be a reception afterward.

Bite of St. Brendan:  (Dayna Wirtala)

The idea has been proposed that a sock-hop should replace the Bite of St. Brendan.   This would require fewer parent volunteers.  Laurie Vasquez is not interested in co-chairing this next year.  Kate O’Brien Rourke is willing to contact the person at Maywood Elementary who organized the sock-hop there.  Things that will need to be researched are:  The cost of a band, what (if any) food to serve, fee to attend.

Hot Lunch: (Carolyn Casey)

Research is currently being done to find companies to provide healthy hot lunches.  Ordering will be done online, it would require only one parent volunteer to oversee it.  A minimum of 50 students to participate each day that lunch is provided.  The company that we are leaning toward is used by St. Luke, Sacred Heart, and Evergreen school, all of which have provided very positive feedback on their food and service.  Lunch will be $3.25 per day.  More research is being done.

Fundraiser for T. Hoang:  (Kate O’Brien Rourke)

A date has been set; April 30, Sunday.  A spaghetti dinner in the gym.  We are looking into a jog-a-thon the same day, we are hoping that this will be mostly kids participating and looking for outside donation.  The goal is to help fund her physical therapy sessions.  There is no budget for the initial expenses that we incur, the object is get as much donated as possible.  This is a PTO fundraiser with the Knights of Columbus helping, and possibly the Son’s of Italy.

Right now we are working on a flyer to let the parish and school know about the fundraiser and what happened to T.   There will also be a collection taken at the dinner.

Closing:

The meeting adjourned at 8:44pm.

Respectfully submitted,

Desiree Engel
